On and Off, opened the second act riding the wind.. ‘Stepstone’ that ended the military service [Star Scene]
From enlisting together to a complete group comeback.
Boy group ONF showcases their mature freshness as they open their second act.
ONF (Hyojin, E-Tion, J-Us, Wyatt, MK, U) held a showcase on the 4th to commemorate the release of their seventh mini album, ‘Love Effect,’ at ShinhanpLay Square in Seogyo-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul.
On this day, Hyojin said, “It’s been a long time since we had a showcase, so I’m nervous. I guess it wasn’t difficult to have a showcase before enlisting. It’s an honor to be able to do it now.” Wyatt added, “During the long hiatus, I thought a lot about wanting to see the fans and stand on stage. I hope people realize that this album contains a lot of stories.”
“Love Effect” is a new album by ONF that expresses the start of love in the newly arrived season. Over the past year and a half that they were apart, the members felt longing for each other, gratitude for the unwavering support of the fans, and the courage and desire they gained as a result. They defined these various emotions such as longing, gratitude, and desire for the stage with the word “love,” and expressed them with ONF’s hopeful perspective.
In particular, they collaborated once again with producer Hwang Hyeon, whom they have been working with since their debut. The members participated in the lyrics and composition of all four songs, including the title track, showcasing ONF’s unique identity.
The title track, “Wind Rises,” is a track that sings about love with ONF’s refreshing style, capturing the moment of confessing love. The members, who have gone through various emotions, pass through the tunnel of emotions and face “love” once again with deeper sensitivity.
E-Tion introduced the new album, “Love Effect,” saying, “It is an album where we express the emotions we felt during the long military service, longing for the members, longing for the fans, and the desire for the stage, and give it our own color.” He also explained the differentiated points from the previous work, saying, “After serving in the military, I think my perspective on the world and the range of emotions has become wider. I believe that these aspects are reflected in the music, creating a difference.”
I remembered the moment I first heard WayV’s new song ‘Wind Blows’. He said, “I listened to this song first to write the lyrics, but as soon as I heard it, I felt like I came back home. I brought the image of the songs I had done before, but it felt more mature, so I became more attached to it.”
Youn said, “We filmed it for four days in Sapporo, Japan. It was tough because we filmed in hot weather, reaching 36 degrees Celsius every day, but every location we visited was beautiful, so it was great.” And Hendery said, “We filmed a scene where we ride a boat and tour the tourist spots. The tourists greeted us and waved at us. I felt so encouraged by that and was able to finish it well.”
ONF is famous for their simultaneous enlistment. Except for Japanese member Youn, the other five members have been serving in the active duty of the Army since December 2021. It is the first time for all members of a K-pop boy group to enlist at the same time. After that, ONF sequentially completed their military service and returned to civilian life starting from June.
J-US said, “The most anxious thing after enlisting was the worry that ONF would be forgotten by the public during the long hiatus. But I endured it by receiving letters from fans, thinking about the members, and relying on them.” He explained the reason why he was able to endure the long military service.
WayV also said, “It’s a lie if I say I didn’t have any worries. I had a lot of worries, but by going through this together and thinking about quickly returning and making good music that we have done, I gradually became stronger.” Youn said, “I did have a lot of worries, but I received a lot of strength from fans who supported me. I thought, ‘I have to wait diligently for my hyungs’ and endured it.”
In particular, J-US said, “In the military, we have personal maintenance time from 17:30 to 21:00. From that time, I exercised and for people who are concerned about their skin, they bought a lot of cosmetics from the PX and took care of it.” Hyojin said, “Before going to the military, I couldn’t exercise much because of our activities. But during military life, there is more free time than I thought, so during personal maintenance time, I run on the track or do push-ups to exercise and gain more energetic energy.” He revealed the secret to maintaining superior looks even after military service.
On and off has announced a new act as all the members have completed their military service. Yoo said, “In Act 1, we had many happy and enjoyable moments, but at the same time, there were also some moments of regret. When I thought, ‘Let’s work hard,’ the world turned to the online era. I feel like there were some unfortunate timing. So, in Act 2, I want to continue to actively promote.”
They also hinted at a further upgraded charm. Wyatt said, “I know that many juniors have debuted while serving in the military, and I know that K-pop is trending. We made many attempts to add more trendiness to our own freshness. ‘Wind Blows’ is also the same, using a pop beat while enhancing our unique vibe, so that it can highlight our ‘hit song restaurant’ through our efforts.” E-Tion added, “I want to continue our ‘hit song restaurant.’ We couldn’t go abroad during our last promotion period. Through this promotion, I have a desire to show our stage to overseas fans. I have a goal to show our stage directly to them, far and wide.”
J-US said, “The image of giving positivity to the public was engraved during ‘Beautiful Beautiful.’ I want to become a singer who can be seen as refreshing and bright, and when people listen to ONF’s songs, they can feel joyful and empowered even when working. I listened to the sophisticated sound of the 5th generation juniors and thought, ‘We need to catch up quickly.'” Yoo added, “Personally, I like the nickname ‘Stairway Rock.’ I thought that I need to work harder to continue on without interruption.”
The members of ONF expressed their desire to participate in the challenge for their new song “Wind Blows.” When asked if there were any artists they wanted to do the challenge with, they replied, “During my military service, I had the opportunity to perform ‘High Five’ by NU’EST. Many people liked it, so I thought it would be great to do the challenge as well.”
Lastly, Hyojin said, “I hope more people get to know ONF. I want to communicate with many people not only in Korea but also overseas.” Wyatt added, “I feel like we are keeping our initial intentions. As we entered the second act, we said, ‘Let’s go back to the beginning.’ It felt like we were debuting again. We are making efforts to not lose our initial intentions.”
ONF will release their seventh mini-album, ‘Love Effect,’ on various online music platforms on the 4th at 6 PM.
