BTS V, the first K-pop solo artist to simultaneously top the official singles and albums charts in English
BTS’ V achieved a career high by setting a record as the first Korean solo artist to top both the UK Official Singles Chart and Spotify with his solo album ‘Layover’ and its title track ‘Slow Dancing’.
On September 15th, ‘Slow Dancing’ topped both the UK Official Singles Sales Chart and the Single Downloads Chart, the home of pop music.
The album ‘Layover’ reached the number one spot on the Official Album Downloads Chart. V became the first Korean solo artist to dominate both charts simultaneously.
With this achievement, V, who reached number one on three UK charts, qualifies for three ‘UK Chart specialist awards’. It is known that the trophies will be awarded based on the artist and agency’s request.
The pre-released music video for ‘Love Me Again’ also made headlines by becoming the first video by a Korean artist to top the ‘Tidal UK Top Videos’ chart in the UK.
On the largest music streaming platform Spotify, a K-pop solo album has surpassed 100 million streams in its first week of release for the first time.
‘Layover’ received a total of 101,448,727 streams in its first week alone, making it the first Korean solo artist and the only record in Asia to achieve this feat, excluding Japanese-Australian singer Joji.
The album ‘Layover’ became the first K-pop solo album to chart on Spotify’s global weekly chart with all of its tracks, and every track on the album achieved 10 million streams in its first week.
V also set a new record for the highest streaming numbers for a solo album debut on the Korean Spotify chart, showcasing his strong music power as a solo artist.
This achievement, achieved without any large playlist promotion or advertisements, holds a greater significance. Fans have been showing abundant support for Kim Taehyung’s future endeavors after this album, which is described as an introduction to him as a solo artist.
Meanwhile, ‘Layover’ topped the iTunes Worldwide chart for six days and surpassed 2.1 million copies in initial sales. V became the first artist to exceed 2 million copies in initial sales for a solo album since the aggregation by Hanteo Chart, and he now holds the record for the most initial sales in the history of K-pop solo albums.
